In my perspective kinds of accidents in the home are frequent in Thailand is drowning. Drowning was previously defined as death secondary to asphyxia while immersed in a liquid, usually water, or within 24 hours of submersion. Drowning remains a significant worldwide public health concern, ranking as the third leading cause of unintentional injury death and accounting for 7% of all injury-related deaths. It is a major cause of disability and death, particularly in children. At least one third of survivors sustain moderate-to-severe neurologic sequelae. In Thailand drowning leading most cause of death for children who were ages under fifteen years. The prevalence rate of morbidity ten twice of dengue fever. Ministry of Public Health of Thailand said, every eight hour usually had children death and every month always had children death more than ninety. The way to decreased drowning has two category for children who under and upper five years. Firstly, For under five years , we will be helping to prevent needless accident.
We should provided the education about prevention to drowning with parents who take care your child. Such as ,pour water, cover the dangerous source and look after children all the time.
Secondly, For upper five year, we should attend to educate and practice them how to swimming and basic help for drowning. The government should provide education and train basic skill for help drowning to people. Begin with every families , school , and community could have leader who recived knowledge and skill for take care their children. And then we should to education and train basic skill for help drowning to every children. They must to know how to prevent and first aid from drowning.
I am shocked to hear the death rate in Thailand. There is challenging issue that how to add the input for Thai to have skills in term of protection and first responding in these matter.
yes.we should protection and responding in these matter. We can reduce the death rate from drowning by encouraged knowledge and improve skill for protect them.
Thanks for bringing the issue of the high prevalence of drowning to our attention. Are Thai children taught how to swim at school, or is it up to the parents to teach them how to swim or to enrol them in swimming lessons? By the way, remember to cite your source for the statistics you use. David :-)
Many kinds of accidents in the home that I think are prevalent in Thailand, depend on aged groups. For example, in the children who aged 0 – 9 years was drowning accident, the teenage often got hurt by road accident, and in the elderly people often got hurt by fall accident.
At present, Thailand has become to aging society, more over fifteen percent of population in Thailand are elderly people that was survey by Department of Older Persons. Therefore, in my view, fall in aging person is an essential problem that are prevalent in Thailand. This is the first problem to find methods for prevention.
In the active aging people who can do anything by themselves, I prefer to advice information that how to protect older person from fall. Likewise, I will advise them to use facilities for elderly people in their home such as should be use pads or rails for area rugs like a bathroom. Because many cases in Thailand came to the emergency room with fall in the bathroom. So that is the one cause of head injuries and cause of death from brain hemorrhage in older persons in Thailand.
In additions, in case of older persons who do not able to take care themselves, the care giver is an important to look after elderly people. The care giver should are significantly given about information that is how to take care aging persons in the right methods. For example, the care giver should do not forget to bring a bed bar up always when stay far from older person to prevent the elderly fall asleep.
In conclusion, if family members look after for elderly in their home well, That can reduce the number of elderly fall problem as well as their want.
there is an important health issue that we are facing and trying to solve the nation burden. I would like to share some notice that to be able to reduce the risk factor in handicapped man. to protect fall,it is reasonable if those people lie on the floor bed. this is the best way to safe their life from fall.
Interesting post, Sai, and interesting response, Aew. Falls are a major cause of injuries among elderly people in New Zealand too. It seems such people often fall and break a hip. Education about using appropriate mats in the bathroom and introducing rails where helpful is a good idea. Do Thais often sleep on the floor? Japanese who live in traditional-style homes usually do? I wonder if they suffer less falls?
I am a nurse working in the in emergency room. For ten years, I occasionally had many experiences about high- falling accident in children in the rural area. High fall is greater numbers of mortality and morbidity. There are variable causes depend on the environmental and personal factors. According to natural causes, two- story structures are common in Thailand. Children are curious naturally, a climbing age is the majority cause of high fall. In addition, unintended injury of tree’s falling illustrates the high rate of mortality such as severe brain injury, neck bones fracture, and intra bleeding. On the other hand, human causes are occurred when adults do not look after their children properly. For instance, a five years old boy fell from the second story house while his mother was playing games on the smart phone. 2P’s strategies are recommended to save a children’s life from high fall. Firstly, protection depicts a vital role to save children far away from high fall injuries. Both the standard of housing equipment and environmentally safer scene are should be concerned to shield children’s life at home. Similarly, the prompt treatment is the key factor if unintended situation occurred unavoidably. Many lives suffer from permanent disability though their life by incorrect first aid method. In contrast, if first procedures precisely assist, it is huge opportunity to either survive or reduce disable rate in children.
Interesting post, Aew. Windows that open present a major hazard when people live in upper stories. Do you know of any public health campaigns in Thailand encouraging the public to add safety locks to their windows?
Falling from windows in multi-story houses in Thailand is rarely occurred. The reason is that the windows are so high that children cannot climb up on those windows. However, parents should be aware all of things that could be causes of accident at home.
In my opinion, House fires occur more frequently in Thailand, especially during summer months. The fire destroys house, human health and human life. There are many Thai people died, have suffered smoke inhalation and have suffered burn each year.
The most common causes of house fires in Thailand are smoking, cooking and electrical fault. While we can’t eliminate all potential causes of house fires, the best way to reduce the number of accidents is that you should be aware of home fire prevention and safety.
Firstly, the best way to prevent smoking related accidents is to not allow it in your home because just a lit cigarette accidentally dropped on any household items can quickly become large fires. Secondly, you should pay extra attention and never leave the kitchen while preparing food. Thirdly, some electrical fires happen because of problems in house wiring or appliance failure, but many occur due to mistakes that homeowners make like overloading electrical outlets. You should avoid plug more than two appliances into an outlet at once and replace old or damaged or frayed appliance cords. Moreover, you should install smoke alarms and have a portable fire extinguisher in your house if you can afford. In addition, you should keep firewood, piles of leaves and trash away from the home, which can reduce the risk of fire.
Smart advice, Lin! Some fires in New Zealand are caused from ashes that aren't disposed appropriately. Quite a few homes still use open coal or wood fires as a means of heating. I wonder if open fires are used for cooking in some Thai homes? Does the disposal of ashes present a fire danger in Thailand?
In northern Thailand annually I always saw bad news about house fires. During a dry season such as Loy Katong festival, the End of The Buddhist Lent Day and the new year festival Thais who living in the area are normally cerebrate those festivals by floating many thousand lanterns. Some evidences were proved that falling lanterns is the cause of fires. The practice of floating lanterns should be canceled because of that either house fires or forest fires hazardously affect on both human and wild animals in the North of Thailand.
In my opinion, the most remarkable prevalence of accidents in homes in Thailand is fires which strongly associate with electrical issues. According to the report, each year there was found significantly high fire incident rate in Thailand as a result of short-circuit. This result in overload sockets, faulty insulation, loose connections of wires, old or broken appliances and so on.
The solutions of this accident are to provide education and policy about preventing and controlling fires in home. Firstly, most causes of fires in home occurs from inhabitants' in-apprehensiveness. So that relative institutes should provide information to people easily to be accessible. For instance, the electricity authorities give brochure or create campaign to prevent short-circuit. The information may include addressing electrical issues for example, prohibiting overload sockets, having electrical wiring checked, and stopping using appliances with frayed power cord and so on.
Another way, the government should launch the policy preventing fires particularly install smoke alarms at home and set a fire extinguisher on hand, or facilitate controlling devices to residents. If the short-circuit or even other similar circumstances occurred until fires, they will be able preliminary manage immediately these issues.
Interesting post, Mint! The problem is that having wiring upgraded is quite expensive. I wonder if any grants are available for, say, landlords to upgrade the wiring in the buildings they let?
In my experience when I worked at Emergegcy Room .The prevalence rate of the most accidents at home result from falls from the stairs and wet floor unmopped, the the number of people injured are old and elderly people. They has eventually slipped on it and had his/her hipbone or leg broken.I believe that the frequency and severity of domestic accidents can be reduced by promoting education about a basic safety in home for each family. A precaution is the main point of accident prevention. They is the keys to must be alert to the risks around them and always take appropriate precautions. In my view that prevention is better than cure.
Smart response. To education, legislation can be added though. Safety gates to prevent infants falling down stairs and hand rails to make it safer for anybody to walk up and down stairs can be made required by law.
There are many kinds of the accidents in the home are found. In my opinion, the fires are the most frequent that are mainly caused by carelessness, negligence and electric appliances. Fires bring about damage to life and properties. Especially, if that occured in the overcrowd area, it is very difficultly to manage of fires. However, the preventing fires is the important to reduce the figures of fires. Fistly, people should aware of electrical issues including electrical checked, stop using appliance with frayed power cords and learnt to manage the fires involving electronic system. Secondary, people should learn about how to manage the fires, for example, steps of using a fire extinguisher on hand, install smoke alarms and create a fire escape plan and need to know the emergency number to ask for help. Finally, conscious and carefulness are important for preventing fires. In conclusion, preventing fires and awareness of electronic equipments checked can reduced the number of fires. In addition, skills of manage the fires should be concerned.
What is being done at present to prevent fires in your public health district? In New Zealand advertisements illustrating the dangers of fire are fairly regularly played on TV.
